New Laws that You should be Aware of

I just got this today, oddly it goes Right with the reply on Ayn Rand post yesterday, who'd have guess,

well, once again, the Fanatics, have passed legislation, with good intents of course, you know, to 'protect' us, but that is going to hurt the Poor, especially those with children who rely on Thrift Stores,

its going to put Lord knows how many Poor and Disabled out of work in those Thrift Stores and Consignment Shops, and it will effect any who sell used clothing at Flea Markets and probably Garage Sales.

The law goes into effect Feb 10, Any used/new clothing sold has to be tested for lead. That is a $50,000 dollar for a small business, for the machines. Small businesses and Thrift stores are going to be on Feb 10 throwing out all used children's clothing/toys, etc [from age 12 to infant] to the Landfills,

there will be no more used clothing for the working poor/poor to buy. Small businesses that sell new clothing, many are going to be folding up, that also means, More jobs lost. They simply can't afford to test every single garment for lead and phthalates, a chemical that makes toys softer. This law was passed in Reaction to the lead cases of recalled items from China [surprise surprise],

mostly from Walmart stores and other Corporate stores. Corporations can afford testing because they have Sweatshops/Labor concentration camps [yes, literally thats what they are] Small stores and consignment stores and Thrift stores that donate proceeds to Veterans, Epilepsy, Salvation Army [lots of funds go to help the homeless/poor from those stores], and will hurt those with either Felony records that can't get jobs elsewhere Or those with disabilities that work in stores such as ARC Thrift stores.

This, I firmly believe, is a Deliberate attack to cut out competition/and to force the poor OUT of the work force by Corporate Textiles, using Environmentalism to do so. This legislation was passed by Congress [Dems strongly behind it].

for more info, please pass this around to Any tribe you know that works whatsoever with used clothing including Reconstructed clothing, as they too will be effected. I'm sure, those who sell used clothes at Garage Sales will also be targeted, eventually,

I also believe this is an attempt for Government to put an end to bartering and working off the grid, in many states its already illegal to 'dumpster dive' or what they call 'scrapping'. Making it IMPOSSIBLE for those who are LEGALLY discriminated from jobs, due to either bad credit, sexual orientation [they discriminate using those Mode of Lifestyle checks and even fast food places are doing these more and more now], divorce, bankruptcy, you name it,

and they Don't have to give you a reason as to why they don't hire you...all they have to say is the report/investigative turned up something. Therefore, forcing more people such as myself, especially with bad credit [and mine is medical bills/student loans], to work off the grid, because no one will hire you...

if you can't work even selling at Flea Markets or if you do have a job but can't afford clothes except at Thrift Stores, well guess what,

your children are going to be forced to wear either rags or go naked or you'll be forced to pay those high prices at the high end stores, or buy from Walmarts, so those who don't shop at Walmart due to sweatshop/bad working conditions, as well as KMarts, etc., will now be forced to.

This law also effects materials used, buttons, you name it, if you work in any form of textile for children's apparel, it effects you.

petition listed in that article/on comment, I'll also post here

Congress passed a new law Aug. 2008 stating that as of Feb. 10, 2009 it will
be illegal to sell any items used for children under the age of 12 if it was
manufactured before Feb. 10, 2009.

This is what YOU can do:
YOU need to call the following 3 people and let them know that you are
calling about the CPSIA Law. (www.cpsc.gov/cpsia.pdf) Tell them that in theory this new law is a good idea, but that they did not take into consideration the consequences it will
have on the rest of us in these already financially trying times. Tell them
whether you are a shopper or a consignor. Also, who and how many you shop
for. Tell them how this law will affect you personally if you could no longer
buy used items. Be passionate and persistent. TELL THEM THIS LAW MUST BE
AMENDED. ASAP!

ROFL, oh this just gets better and better,

well, now I'll be I suppose selling Contraband, might as well fucking sell drugs, Seriously, FUCK THE USA, I'm fed up,

Anyhow, it isn't just clothes/jewelry, been doing research on this stupid ass Big Brother law which, btw, every damn Congressman/woman voted for,

all but one, and Guess who voted no, out of 530 something of them, Ron Paul. The rest, stupid fucks, sorry but you know, penalizing little old ladies who knit baby booties and jailing them even if their booties have any lead [and the new limits will be stricter] --

checked into the costs, it would cost me, LOL, for one child's hat, $500 for one lead test--thats after taking it apart, as everything, from zippers to buttons to threads to fabric, has to be tested, by a third party CORPORATION,

and then, thats just That one hat, IF, I make another, once more, have to do it again. So lets see folks, I take some old denim, cut up and resew a hat, and now I will have to Sell that one reconstructed to save the landfill from wasted clothes, for a whopping $1,000 to afford the test for just that one hat,

now, how many of you would like to buy a hat from me for a grand? LOL LOL LOL LOL

Anyway, it gets better, I wasn't aware that this 122 page stupid law includes BOOKS TOO,

libraries will be now trashing, no kidding here, childrens' books, or banning children from libraries.

This is no joke, Here you go, poor people, poor working class, single moms and elderly who sew quilts either For the poor or to sell to pay for food after paying for Medicines,

are all screwed. Literally, the law did revise and 'exempts' thrift stores from testing BUT, they can still be fined if some person buys something and child gets lead poisoning and that store can be fined and IMPRISONED.

The thing is, no body wants to poison children, I'm all for product safety, MY QUESTION TO THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT THEN IS

WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T YOU DEMAND SAFETY IN YOUR FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH CHINA IN THE FIRST DAMN PLACE AND WHY PUNISH POOR FOLKS HERE, SMALL BUSINESSES, WHILE BAILING OUT CORPORATIONS WHO CAN AFFORD LEAD TESTING,

ALL BECAUSE YOU FUCKED UP, USA GOVERNMENT?

    BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS--

instead, punish the working American person or the homeless person who wants to make money [many Homeless women work for coops that make garments/bean toys, etc and NOW they will be forced out of that, guess its only prostitution now ladies],

I am so pissed right now, you know, they want to make any legit good thing Contra band, FINE, I'll sell contraband,

not the fabric kind though. If I'm going to be going to prison, might as well go with a bang, you know,

You get to that damn point, seriously. When you do Everything you can do make ends meet and you really Want to work and improve your life and the government makes it Impossible,

the POLICE NANNY STATE, what else is there?

anyway, Whats next USA, books, because they might contain lead,

hey, why not just do what the fanatical Medievalists do that you're in bed with anyway,

just go ahead and bomb schools and libraries and forbid girls from education, might as well, might as well. Won't be long and we'll be like the women in Afghanistan, begging on the streets and probably being stoned to death for being accused of prostitution...

sorry for Venting here, several of us were working to help women right now who are losing their apartments, with children, to do some kind of coop,

now we can't unless we break the law. And they just cut daycare assistance on the same day, today...

    SO MUCH FOR CHANGE, LOL.

signed with bitterness and a lot of anger/rage...

Sorry about going off while writing this,

I've been on about ten lists [Etsy being one of them], mostly low income women, who have either children with special needs and they have to stay home or older women, not just women either,

men who have illnesses or who have prison records [for drugs, etc] who may be scrapping or recycling for income and this stupid law is NOT going to put a Dent in the Corporations or for China's trade [there are so many loopholes for them both]

no, its going to HURT the poor/working poor and not just the poor, its Really going to hit hard to all those small businesses, its literally going to force thousands out, which btw,

is going to Increase in a major way any clothes/items including strollers, car seats, you name it, out of your price range, out of middle class price range even, because the Consumer is going to not only be Forced to buy from the Corporate-Franchise stores now, they are going to be paying out the ass for items,

to pay for this testing. How this will effect items coming in from China, which the law at first was intended, who knows, if its Anything like the food industry, Good luck with that,

you'll still be seeing lead contaminated and other chemicals in foods, items from other countries. The book thing really got me though, the Libraries right now are in session/discussion over what to Do about this, banning children from libraries? I mean, Geesh,

are we now in Pakistan/parts of India where Taliban are bombing schools and telling buses that they had better remove all music [and you'd be surprised at how many anti-imperialists I know support those thugs to fight imperialism, yea give me a break, douchebags, seriously],

so, LOL, then I find, this is going to effect Craigslist and garage sales after all, all it will take is one lawsuit, or hint, complaint filed and IF they find an item has been sold, including a book, with the exceeding limit, well,

off to court they go. The Lawyers of course, LOVE this bill, Sure they do. I can see them licking their chops now, bet Feb by the end we'll be seeing the Law commercials with the, "have you been poisoned by little old grannies baby quilt, we take care of that, with no charge to you but a commission we'll see to it that we sue that old lady for every dime she has and justice will be served, just contact So and So lawfirm, why we're the Lead Lawyers now.

LOL, seriously though, nothing surprises me...so, Just in case you think I'm nuts [I'm not, trust me, just pissed], let me include some links to just how stupid and Draconian this law is,

and some of the discussions around it. I would have known about it sooner but I haven't checked my reconstruct blog in long while where I have many friends in the same Indie type of businesses, most of them are working poor btw.

links: one third party that Does the testing--the prices, this btw is by law, has to be done for each and every thing one makes/sells

      www.polymertesting.com/

      m.kitsapsun.com/news/2009/...tsap-shops/

You have no idea what you're talking about, clearly.

Not everyone wants to buy the same mass-produced crap sold by Mattel and Target. In fact, most recalled toys are made by your well-known rich toy folks.

And you DO have to test the components. I'm an artisan. I've looked into this greatly. If the only things I made were children's items, my business and thus only income would be fucked.

There are no loopholes in this law. If you make or sell anything that can even be slightly meant for children, you'll have to get them lead tested. And not those small and cheap at home lead testing kits, you need a lab to do it. Of course, the labs charge obscene fees.

And this law not only includes toys, but anything that is meant for children; bibs, baby slings, books, clothes, etc. So if your mom sews your daughter a little dress and you want to sell it one day, make sure you have at least $500 dollars to get every part tested first.

Lack of knowledge about the details regarding this law is the reason why it's not getting as much attention as it deserves.

o.k., Whatever, think it might be wiser to keep up with the Survivalist shows/Man vs Wild, as we might very well be forced to live like that in the Richest nation on earth.
